Week 3 Waiver Wire Pickups

September 17, 2019

Oof. This week’s waiver wire is particularly busy considering the injuries to Drew Brees and Big Ben, not to mention the hits that the skill players on their respective teams will take. Thankfully, there are a few options that should be available on your waiver wire to get you through these tough times or like any true fantasy player, you can pick these guys up to spite your league mates who just lost those guys, your call.

WR's - Mecole Hardman (37% owned) and Demarcus Robinson (3.5% owned)

Look, Patrick Mahomes is a fantasy beast and I’m a believer in that he could throw 50 TD passes again this year. The dude is just that good. That being said, these two WRs showed out last week with Tyreek Hill sidelined and will continue to be for at least another 4 weeks. I much prefer Hardman out of these two, but if you’re in a deeper league or dynasty then Robinson is worth a grab as well. The bottom line, any Mahomes receiving option can give you a blow-up game.

WR Terry McLaurin (44.5% owned)

McLaurin was a waiver wire wonder from last week, but there’s a chance he’s still on your waiver wire and if he is, then you need to prioritize him this week. I’ll admit that I thought Washington was going to be one of the worst offenses in football, but Case Keenum is proving more competent and McLaurin has been the primary beneficiary. McLaurin is one of only 5 WRs through Week 2 that has seen more than 50% of his team’s air yards, according to NextGenStats. McLaurin is a prime pickup for those needing WR help.

RB Raheem Mostert (13.3% owned)

I’ll admit it. There is some risk with prioritizing Mostert this week, especially with starting RBs out there like Frank Gore. However, Mostert went HAM backing up Matt Breida and any RB that gets work under Shanahan is going to have some sort of fantasy value. Mostert is worth a grab in most leagues, if nothing else, just to see what his usage will be moving forward. However, I don’t know if I’d be starting him as he may have just been on the lucky end of the rushing TD’s for the 49ers in a blowout game.

RB Frank Gore (12.3% owned)

This man refuses to be irrelevant to fantasy owners. Gore has, yet again, found himself in the starter role for an NFL team and he should be picked up as a result. The Bills are 2-0 under Josh Allen’s reign and they show no signs of slowing down. With Singletary suffering what appears to be some sort of soft tissue injury, Gore has the potential to have a lock on this starting job for the foreseeable future. That combined with his ability to give a solid floor makes him an easy waiver wire wonder, this week.

Sneaky Pickup - WR James Washington

There’s a very real possibility that this turns into nothing. However, with Big Ben out for the rest of the season and Juju struggling to put up WR1 numbers, there is room for Washington to grow in this offense. Historically, backup QBs tend to target the WR2 and WR3 of the team more because they have practiced with them more. On top of that, Mason Rudolph actually played in college with Washington. Oh, and if you’re worried about Moncrief being in his way, just go watch his highlights from the last two weeks. The Steelers are probably regretting that signing already.
