Can you hear that? The excitement? The fear? The thrill? It's the sound of the fantasy football roller coaster taking off. This is the time of the year that we have all been waiting for. By now most of us have drafted our teams for the season and are looking forward to week 1. Let's take a look at some marquee matchups for week 1.
Kirk Cousins vs ATL
Cousins struggled at times last season but should see a big turnaround in his 2nd season in this offense. The Falcons come to town wielding a high powered offense to which the Vikings will have to respond to. Cousins is equipped with two great wide receivers in Diggs and Thielen and he will be looking to hit them all game.
Lamar Jackson @ MIA
As with all mobile quarterbacks, Lamar Jackson has a decent floor. He has had a good camp/preseason and has looked to improve as a passer. Jackson gets a juicy matchup in week 1 against a subpar defense in Miami.
Phillip Rivers vs IND
It is looking like Melvin Gordon will be a no show for at least week 1. This team is going to have lean hard on Rivers. Phil is armed with 2 great receivers in Allen and Williams. He is poised for a big game at home against the Colts.
Baker Mayfield vs TEN
Baker Mayfield will be looking to pick up where he left off last season. He was scorching hot. He will be even more dangerous this year with some new weapons added this offseason. This isn't the greatest matchup in the world for Baker but I think this offense will be good enough for him to have a great game.
Derek Carr vs DEN
This is going to be a tough matchup for Carr. He will be dealing with a lot of pressure coming off of the ends from Chubb and Miller. Not to mention Denver has some good corners.
Cam Newton vs LARams
It's not even week 1 and Cam Newton is dealing with injury woes. On top of that, Cam is going to have to deal with a fierce pass rush led by Aaron Donald. Cam is a no go for me in week 1.
Matt Ryan vs MIN
Ryan always seems to struggle in away games. Minnesota has a solid defense this year. I look for Matt Ryan to have an alright game, but that isn't what you drafted him for. Some will have no choice but to start him, but I would be weary starting Matt.
Mark Ingram @ MIA
Ingram is in line for a lot of work in week 1. Baltimore ran the ball a ton last season. Miami doesn't have much to brag about in terms of defense. Look for Ingram to have a huge game in week 1.
Phillip Lindsay @ OAK
Lindsay was the surprise of last year. Most people plucked him off of waivers with little to no expectations of him. He was a ball of fire last year. Oakland had a ton of turnover on defense this year. Lindsay is going to put up some decent numbers in his week one outing against a weak Oakland front.
Tevin Coleman @ TB
This is Coleman's first year in San Francisco but this is not his first year in Kyle Shanahan's offense. He is familiar with this offense and had success in it before. Coleman gets a great matchup in his week 1 debut vs Tampa Bay and will take advantage of it.
David Montgomery vs GB
Montgomery astonished spectators during his rookie preseason. There are high hopes for him coming out of Chicago. Montgomery won't be a solidified bell cow with Cohen around, but there will be plenty of work for both of these young backs to go around. Montgomery has a style that fits right in line with Nagy's offense.
Duke Johnson @ NO
With their new addition at running back, the Houston Texans hope to replace the void left by injured Lamar Miller. Duke Johnson has never carried the load his entire professional career. He has always been a complimentary piece. On top of that, New Orleans was very good at stopping the run last season. I'm staying away from Duke this week.
Kenyan Drake/Kalen Ballage vs BAL
Miami's offense appears to be a mess. They have back up quarterbacks competing for the starting job, a depleted wide receiver core, and an underwhelming split at running back. Baltimore may have lost a few pieces of their defense, but they haven't lost the ability to stop the run. I would wait to see how the Miami situation shakes out before starting either one of these guys.
Devin Singletary @ NYJ
LeSean McCoy has been let go by the Bills. This leaves a committee of Singletary, Gore, and Yeldon. I am taking a "wait and see" approach to the Buffalo backfield. Singletary has potential, but it is capped by old reliable Frank Gore and a great pass-catching back in Yeldon.
Kenny Golladay/Marvin Jones Jr. @ ARI
This is a prime matchup for the Lions wide receivers. Patrick Peterson is suspended for 6 weeks and their 2nd best corner(Robert Alford) will be out with an injury for a while. There is going to be plenty of room for Golladay and Jones Jr. to run rampid in week 1.
Tyler Lockett vs CIN
Tyler Lockett is a great start in week 1. The Bengals defense is aging and their pass rush is diminished. This will make it very hard on the Bengals secondary to keep up with burner Tyler Lockett.
Curtis Samuel vs LARams
Curtis Samuel should be the Panther's wide receiver to start this week. Assuming Aqib Talib is covering DJ Moore most of the game, Samuel will be left with Marcus Peters & company. Peters was used and abused last year by quick wideouts.
Dede Westbrook vs KC
Jacksonville may be chasing points in this game. They lost a step on defense last year and KC has high octane offense. This will put JAX in a hole and they will have to throw out of it. Enter Westbrook. He is the Jags best WR and will be in line for plenty of work in week 1.
Dante Pettis @ TB
Pettis has received some criticism from his head coach this offseason. He is also dealing with a groin injury. This is a nagging injury for a wide receiver. This is a decent matchup for Pettis but he will not be able to meet his full potential.
TY Hilton @ LAChargers
Hilton was poised to have a huge season this year...until Andrew Luck announced a surprise retirement. Hilton may be okay throughout the season, but he is going to be inconsistent. The Chargers have a solid defense as well. If I have an option with a better matchup this week I'm starting them over Hilton.
DJ Moore vs LARams
Moore is going to have a tough matchup in week 1. He will be getting the Aqib Talib treatment. If you have options that are in the same tier as Moore, I'd look to them in week 1.
Delanie Walker @ CLE
Walker is back and he is healthy. Mariota will be looking to his safety net often against a stout Cleveland defense. Walker will have a modest week 1 comeback game.
Mark Andrews @MIA
This is such a good matchup for Baltimore that I also have to suggest their tight end. As one of his favorite targets, Jackson will look to Andrews quite a bit in this game.
Jared Cook vs HOU
Cook is a new weapon in Drew Brees' arsenal. He had a great year in Oakland last season. He has now moved to a team that is an upgrade in every way, shape, or form. Cook will be looking to establish a good rapport with his new quarterback. Houston is also lacking on defense after losing Clowney.
Austin Hooper @ MIN
Atlanta is in for a tough game against Minnesota. The defense is healthy and strong. A lot of this game will flow through Julio and Freeman. Hooper may be doing a little more blocking than receiving. If you have a better option, start them.
Trey Burton vs GB
Burton was overhyped last year. He was very disappointing down the stretch. He seemed to become a less important part of the offense. I wouldn't trust Burton until he shows something. Anything.
David Njoku vs TEN
Tennessee was very good against the tight end position last year. Njoku may give you an alright floor for a tight end, but I feel like his ceiling is capped in this game. I would look elsewhere if you have the options to do so.
