Fantasy Football for me is a yearlong hobby that started 20 years ago, and I have grown to love it more and more each year (my wife can't say the same). The years of experience I believe helps me with understanding what it takes to win consistently. Most of my data comes from my head even though we are in the age of technology (Matt Spencer). Whether it is draft strategy, FA strategy, trade strategy, lineup strategy, Finding that hidden Gem. It's always about how we can zig while everyone else is zagging.
Different years bring different trends. First, I can remember was when a TE was considered nothing more than a late round pick just like Def and Kicker. That's when I began drafting the likes of Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez in the typically 5th to 7th round. The value was incredible typically making my roster a virtual lock for the playoffs. Now however TE's are valued so high they aren't as much of a value making it almost more advantageous to finding late round sleepers unless someone in a higher tier falls to you.
Next was the thought you had to go RB early and often that's when I would typically go heavy on top notch Wide receivers and using my knowledge for late round high upside Running Backs or using waiver wire to find eventual starters (Priest Holmes 2001, Ryan grant 2007) two of the better examples for me personally but every year there are waiver pickups that will help you win your championship.
Bringing us to currently where it seems over the past couple years Wide receivers have been increasingly going up rankings. Gone are the days when the first round is virtually all Running Backs. This year I'm considering taking 2 running backs out of my first 3 picks. I think the value at running back is much greater at the top of the board this year than waiting until later. There are tons of receivers to fill out your roster later in the draft.
Starting now there are week to week or even day to day trends. These trends can be brought on by Injury (to the player or other players on the team), social media hype, coach hype. Here's where it's crucial to follow those trends and sell high, buy low. Whether it's trading, ADP rising or falling uncontrollably for draft day bargains and players that become undraftable, or if you've drafted already hitting the waiver wire at the right time.
Our job is to keep you informed about what trends we like and what trends we don't. How to come out ahead in your draft, working trade offers and pointing out valuable players to follow on the waiver wire. I say don't be caught always following the herd. Blaze your own path to your league championship. There's not much better than that feeling.
