The wide receiver position has a lot of talent this year, even in later rounds, but in this article I am talking about big name players that in my view are overvalued. If you fancy winning your fantasy league this year I would recommend keeping these bums off of your rosters.
Brandin Cooks (3.03) ADP
Brandin Cooks moved from Drew Brees to Tom Brady this off season, going from the Saints to the Patriots. It’s a great move from a football sense but for fantasy it’s a blow to Cooks value in my eyes. Cooks has finished the last two seasons as a top 12 WR in standard scoring, finishing 9th and 11th. Tom Brady loves to spread the ball around and with so many options such as Gronkowski, Edelman, Malcolm Mitchell, Chris Hogan and Dwayne Allen; and that’s just wide receivers and tight ends; they also have Rex Burkhead, Dion Lewis and James White, who are all great pass catchers on the roster. It’s going to be tough for Cooks to get enough targets to finish 2017 in the top 12 again.
He will be the main deep threat for the team but going from the 2nd team in pass attempts to the 23rd is not a positive, if Edelman were to leave then I’d be intrigued but at the moment his price is just too high.
For fantasy I can’t be touching him at his current ADP with all the receivers at the patriots’ disposal. I prefer him in Best Ball leagues because Cooks will have some massive games but in standard it will be harder to predict when these games will be. I’m not touching him till the 5th round at the earliest but someone will have taken him by then. Most leagues have one or two Patriots fan boys.
DeAndre Hopkins (3.05) ADP
Deandre Hopkins had a great season in 2015 playing with Brian Hoyer, before the 2016 season most people were really excited with the Texans getting their new franchise quarter back in Brock Osweiler. Hopkins was being drafted as a first-round pick for the 2016 season and on paper it looked like he was going to have a great season. Brock Osweiler was dreadful and Hopkins suffered, Hopkins failed to get to 1000 yards and having him on your roster in 2016 was extremely frustrating.
This season I’m expecting the quarterback play to be just as bad. For now Tom Savage is the starter but rookie Deshaun Watson should be named starter sooner rather than later but for this year I’m not on board with drafting Hopkins in the 3rd round. It will be tough for him to reach the heights of 2015 when he was playing with Brian Hoyer and finished as WR6. Hoyer is secretly good at keeping his receivers relevant- Pierre Garcon breakout incoming.
I have Hopkins as my WR17 in my personal rankings, but it’s very doubtful that he will find his way on to any of my teams, he is talented and will get a ton of targets but the quarterback play will hold him back once again, whoever the starter may be. Let someone else have the hassle of worrying about him each week.
He will be playing against Jalen Ramsey week one and the psychological torment Hopkins is going to receive will make his season a write off.
Next week I will be looking at the tight end position to let you in on who I won’t be taking at their current ADPs.
