When drafting there are always players that you love or you think may breakout, (i.e. Martavis Bryant = Steelers’ no.1 receiver). Then there are some guys that when you look at rankings and you see their name that high up you feel queasy. Be it situation or talent you just can’t get on board with taking them at their current price. Over the next few weeks I’m going to let you in on the guys who I won’t drafting at their current ADPs.
Todd Gurley (2.07) ADP
Last season Todd Gurley was being drafted as the no.1 running back and was in some leagues going as the 1st overall pick, those who took him there were less than pleased with their decision. The 2016 season was a disaster for Todd Gurley, he only rushed for 885 yards on 278 carries, (3.2 yards per carry) and six touchdowns, he also added 43 catches for 327 yards. He only had five games with double digits in fantasy points.
The Los Angeles Rams offense is one of the worse in the league but their offensive line looks on paper to be in better shape going in to 2017, with the additions of old timer Andrew Whitworth at left tackle and John Williams at centre, this should help the whole offense.
The Rams also have a new exciting head coach this year in Sean McVay with the firing of Jeff Fisher in 2016, McVay did wonders for the Washington offence but the Rams are nowhere near the level of the Redskins yet. McVay runs a pass first offence and the Rams will be throwing a lot more this season, which doesn’t help Gurley’s value as he has never been a great pass catcher and McVay has already said that new addition Lance Dunbar will be the third down back in a similar role to Chris Thompson’s in Washington. Side note love Dunbar’s value in ppr leagues he should see plenty of targets from Jared Goff, Dunbar is currently going undrafted on FantasyFootballCalculator.com. In deeper leagues Dunbar could be a great bye week streaming option.
Teams are going to stack the box against Gurley with teams wanting Jared Goff to try and beat them through the air. Even with the potential of an upgraded O-Line it’s going to be another tough year for Gurley and I expect him to see less touches this year now that McVay is calling the plays. If Gurley gets double digit touchdowns please feel free to @ me on twitter. It isn’t happening.
Maybe I’m still reeling from the horror show of last year but from what I know Mr Gurley will not be on any of my teams this year, I will 0% shares. He’s going 19th overall in standard leagues and I won’t be using a 2nd or 3rd round pick on him anytime soon. People are getting more excited for Todd Gurley from watching ‘All or Nothing’, he is a talented running back but this situation playing for the Rams just doesn’t give him any upside. Don’t believe the hype, stay away.
Carlos Hyde (3.12) ADP
Carlos Hyde was the No.14 fantasy running back in standard leagues with 217 carries for 988 yards, (4.55 yards per carry), six touchdowns, 27 catches for 163 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games last year which was pretty good. This year is different
Kyle Shanahan is the new head coach and it’s been said Hyde is a bad fit for the new offence. They have added Tim Hightower, Kapri Bibbs and Joe Williams, the player that Shanahan had to beg the GM to draft. They also added fullback Kyle Juszczyk to the mix. A report from OTA's suggested that Hyde was "the slowest and most indecisive running back on the team", not what you want to hear about the team’s no.1 running back.
Hyde is also very injury prone having missed 14 games in his first three years in the league. He has suffered an mcl tear, foot fracture, ankle sprain, herniated disc and multiple concussions in just three seasons.
I love Hyde’s talent and if he was traded away, I’d be all over taking him but with all I’m hearing I can’t face taking him at his current ADP. If he is still the starter, with more mouths to feed and the team passing more, his carries per game are going to be down this year. The 49ers backfield is certainly going to be one to watch at training camp but if you are drafting soon and Hyde manages to end up on your team I’d consider getting his handcuff Joe Williams for security given Hyde’s injury history, if Williams gets a chance he could run away with the job. His ADP has been dropping for some time now but he’s still too rich for my blood. Personally, I wouldn’t want to touch him till the 5th round at the earliest but even at that price I wouldn’t feel particularly good about it.
Next week I will be looking at the wide receiver position to let you in on who I won’t be taking at their current ADPs.
